VOWZ BAR

Yotsuya

A pleasant Zen moment with alcohol

A bar where you can enjoy alcohol while being surrounded by mandalas and scriptures, giving you a feeling as if you were in a temple, with active monks. This bar offers the unique opportunity to experience the unexpected side of monks, who may be perceived as strictly adhering to religious precepts with alcohol being considered taboo.

In addition, one unique activity that can only be experienced at this bar is the ability to draw fortune slips (omikuji) while enjoying your drinks

the distinctive features of the establishment

Upon request, monks can join you at your table and engage in conversations or provide advice on life’s troubles through the counter. They listen to customers’ concerns and offer advice based on Buddhist teachings. The bar serves as a well-designed system and is often referred to as a place just before counseling. It is more approachable than a “counseling room.” Therefore, conversations can easily spark over a single counter. There are specific times for chanting sutras, usually from 9 PM to 10:30 PM, during which active monks chanting, and customers can participate in reciting the chants. Being able to experience authentic Buddhist chanting at a bar is a significant feature.

the atmosphere of the establishment

Inside the bar, there are Buddhist altars, surrounded by mandalas and scrolls with scriptures written on them. Incense is also burned, creating an atmosphere that truly makes you feel like you are in a temple.

One of the elements of experiential bars is the opportunity to experience calligraphy by transcribing a single character from a Buddhist sutra just before leaving the establishment.
